Whitney Nash

Whitney Nash, adventure seeker and laid-back friend is always on the go but sat down to share the best, worst, and funniest moments from her latest trips.

Winter or summer trip?

Summer.

Window or aisle seat?

Oh, definitely window.

Carry-on or checked bag?

I’m an over-packer – definitely checked bag.

What type of person are you during travel, go with the flow and let others take the lead or plan and execute?

I prefer go-with-the-flow because you discover cool things by being open to more.

Most likely to lose: ID, Phone, Credit Card

This one’s a funny one because I recently lost it all in one go. I carry them all together. You realize how helpless you are when you can’t call an uber and all the T’s (Boston transit) are shut down.

What trip is on your bucket list and who’s coming with?

This is such a tough one because there’s so many places I want to go. I would love to go to India with some friends, but I don’t know who those friends would be. There’s friends that are good for everyday life and then there’s friends that are good for travel. I love places that are bustling with lots of colors and things to see and bright and a little less touristy.

3 non skips on your plane playlist

I have the most rogue playlist because it’s always on shuffle. But typically, I have one song, and I loop it probably ten times on the plane ride.

What is one unforgettable experience you’ve had on a group trip?

I lived and grew up in Guatemala, so I brought 11 friends down this past spring. I was working remotely from there for like two months and then a bunch of people came and joined me for the last week which was really fun. I was planning the entire trip which is why I was like Arielle, “I need this app!” but obviously not launched yet.

Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t know whether to laugh or cry?

I studied abroad in Tanzania, and we were going to the coast, there were three of us. The bus ride there was 14 hours with no stop, without a bathroom. We didn’t drink water for like 24 hours before, because we were really panicked about it.

Have you ever had a travel plan go completely wrong/ have you ever taken a wrong turn and discovered something?

Totally yes. Many times, in Tanzania, oftentimes it would be language barriers with public transit. We got into the taxi and started driving and the taxi driver sped past a police stop and they ended up coming after us and chasing us. It was the three of us, my two friends and myself in this taxi on a police chase. These police came and arrested our taxi driver. Our Swahili at that point was iffy. We waited at the police station until one of the taxi drivers’ friends came and filled in and took us on the rest of our car ride. I don’t know if that was exactly our fault, but it was definitely an interesting turn of events.

Why do you travel?

So many reasons. I really like when you’re on the move, seeing a lot of different things, interacting with people. You get to interact with more local people and then learn their stories. There are so many places out there that are super cool and I want to experience as much as possible. This is so cliché, but you definitely come back with a different perspective on your own life too.
