Embracing Spontaneity & Discovering New Destinations
Grace Miskovsky, art and travel enthusiast, highlights her experiences in the art world of Basel, Switzerland, her approach to spontaneity, and travel preparations.
Grace lets her passions dictate her travel destinations. Most recently, she visited Basel, Switzerland “I study art history and am really involved in the art world… I knew how important Basel was for the art scene and I saw an advertisement for this exhibition, I immediately booked a flight.” For Grace, each trip starts with an idea, which then evolves into a plan.
When there’s free time, she is always looking to fill it. This is where her spontaneous nature comes in. In terms of spontaneity, Grace thinks “[a] lot of it is intuitive... I was in this park next to the main university …I saw this guy walking in the park…I went up to him and I said, ‘I’m in Basel alone, it’s my first time here, where do you recommend?’ Just from that one interaction, we ended up becoming really good friends and he showed me around.” Grace’s biggest piece of advice? “You have to let go of any expectation of what could happen. Anyone that you talk to when you’re traveling alone or with a group, they could turn out to be a really close friend or a life-changing experience. Or they could just be a random person you met in that city. Both of those outcomes are totally fine and part of the process.”
For Grace, travel plans strike a balance between the planned and the impromptu. She reveals she’s “quite a big planner. I like to see where things go and challenge myself to explore but I like having an idea; of what neighborhoods I’m going to like and where I want to go.” When it’s time to relax from the constant chaos of travel plans she shares her go-to chill activities. “Downtime for me is being at a café or…having a glass of wine and writing in my journal.” These activities let her mind rest until it's time for the next adventure. She isn't one to nap and doesn’t like to stay cooped up in her hotel room. Besides her loose plan she lets the excitement find her, which it always does!
Being spontaneous, Grace is always traveling to new places. She's learned a lot along the way. “[I]t’s good to be conscious of who you are. What you’re interested in and what types of things you’re attracted to because then you can keep your eye out for the identity of the city that resonates most with you. Every time I go to a city, I really want to explore their art scene because that’s something that really resonates with me.” Grace puts importance on things that excite and align with you. It's the experiences and personal connections that matter most to her.
